Open to individuals that meet the requirements for a level 1 or 2 perinatal instructor position.

General Summary:

The Perinatal Instructor will provide education and support to expecting mothers, fathers, and caregivers on topics related to maternal health, infant care, and parenting. The instructor will conduct classes to promote health, safety, and well-being during pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy. This role requires expertise in maternal and infant care, excellent communications skills, and a strong passion for supporting families through one of the most important stages of life.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Perinatal Instructor 1:

  • 2+ years of experience in maternal and infant health, or women’s health as a doula, midwife, nurse, medical assistant, lactation consultant, or nurse practitioner.
  • If teaching Breastfeeding classes, the candidate must be a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC).
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 3-month timeframe, or prior to instructing classes (will train).
  • Must have one of the following:
    1. Diploma in a health-related field
    2. Associate's degree in nursing, public health, maternal and child health, or related field from an accredited institution.
      1. Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Perinatal Instructor 2:

  • 5+ years of experience in maternal and infant health, or women’s health as a doula, midwife, nurse, medical assistant, lactation consultant, or nurse practitioner.
  • If teaching Breastfeeding classes, the candidate must be a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC).
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 3-month timeframe, or prior to instructing classes (will train).
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health, maternal and child health, or related field from an accredited institution.

Requirements for both:

  • Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions, constructive feedback, and build rapport with participants.
  • Knowledge of prenatal and postnatal care, breastfeeding, infant care, and safety guidelines.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with the ability to engage diverse groups.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and counseling skills.
  • Compassionate, patient, and approachable demeanor.
  • Fluency in multiple languages (preferred but not required).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with community members, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Cultural sensitivity to ensure programs are inclusive and accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds and physical abilities.
  • Ability to travel locally to conduct in-person sessions or workshops.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, and weekends to accommodate program schedules.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and deliver evidence-based educational programs and resources on maternal health, infant care, and parenting.
  2. Provide instruction on prenatal health, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, infant CPR, safe sleep practices, and postpartum care.
  3. Assist in the creation of educational materials, including handouts, presentations, and online resources.
  4. Offer emotional and practical support to expectant parents and caregivers through educational sessions and discussions.
  5. Assess the learning needs of participants and tailor lessons accordingly to ensure comprehensive understanding and engagement.
  6. Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for families to ask questions, express concerns, and build confidence in their parenting abilities.
  7. Stay current on the latest research, guidelines, and practices in maternal and infant health to provide up-to-date, reliable information.
  8. Track participant attendance and provide feedback and follow-up as necessary.
  9. Maintain a confidential and non-judgmental approach while addressing sensitive topics related to maternal and infant health.
  10. Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
