Job summary
A part of Amazon's Robotics Artificial Intelligence, Canvas Technology is using spatial AI to provide end-to-end autonomous delivery of goods. By using state-of-the-art cameras and other sensors, the system perceives its surroundings with unrivaled vision and fidelity. The system combines a mix of high-performance sensors with simultaneous localization and mapping software that builds and continuously updates maps in real-time, completely automatically. It has the capability to ‘see’ and identify different objects, people, vehicles, and places as it moves and react to moving people and vehicles in an intelligent way.

The Systems Architecture group at Canvas collaborates with operations partners and engineers from multiple disciplines to design automation systems and ensure components are well specified, integrate cohesively, and delight customers. The team adapts tools and best practices from traditional systems engineering for the speed of development at Amazon. Throughout the development lifecycle, we work to balance performance, robustness, cost, and speed of delivery for our systems.

Canvas is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join a dynamic team that provides systems leadership for concept development, architecture, and design of robotics systems (focus on safety system). In this role, you will:

  • Participate in high level exploration and analysis of business problems and user needs
  • Define, expand, and explore the design space for complex, multidisciplinary robotics and automation problems
  • Break down and frame problems using CONOPS, use cases, functional/physical decompositions, and other system representations to clarify needs and align technical teams
  • Derive requirements, identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives, including impact on performance, schedule, cost, risk, complexity, and scale
  • Applying IEC industrial standards for the development lifecycle of a robotic control system, and coaching developers on processes to apply during this phase.
  • Writing or reviewing safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, and verification and validation plans.
  • Build quantitative models and analyses (Excel, MATLAB, Python, internal tools) to conduct trade studies, refine requirements, and understand key system drivers across the integrated systems of systems
  • Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale
  • Perform technical risk assessments (such as Failure Mode analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Gap Analysis, FMECA, HARA, etc.), devise mitigation plans, and create system test strategies
  • Guiding the design controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment for use in a functionally safe product
  • Driving projects to closure; ensuring that systems can be manufactured, deployed, maintained, and meet regulatory requirements for certification
  • Ensuring control systems comply to machinery safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496)


  • BS or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, or another STEM discipline
  • Experience developing complex, multidisciplinary systems from concept to deployment
  • Broad understanding of hardware, controls, and software, with the ability to dive in a specific domain
  • Experience with eliciting and clarifying business and end user needs, and translating those to requirements
  • Experience leading technical collaborations and creating alignment across diverse groups (e.g., technical disciplines, subsystem teams, development partners)
  • Experience identifying and analyzing dependencies, tradeoffs, and sensitivities across multi-disciplinary systems using data
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience


  • Familiarity/experience with IEC standards for electrical controls for robotics or machinery (IEC 62061, IEC 13849, ISO 10218/ANSI RIA 15.06), or similar experience in other industries (IEC 62304, ISO 26262, etc.)
  • Experience with INCOSE systems engineering best practices and ability to tailor process to an appropriate level of rigor and to the available resources
  • Technical expertise in at least one domain: Industrial Automation, Robotic Vehicles/Manipulation, Automotive, Medical Devices, Enterprise and/or Embedded Software, Autonomy, Perception and Controls, Human Centered Design
  • Master’s level degree in an Engineering field
  • 10+ years of experience in system design

The pay range for this position in Colorado is $151,200 - 177,900[yr]; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
