Cardiac Sonographer/Vascular Sonographer - Cardiovascular Services* Resource

General Summary:

The Cardiac Sonographer performs routine and/or specialized cardiac ultrasound exams. The echocardiographer acquires/analyzes data using diagnostic medical ultrasound and related technologies providing calculations/data for medical staff interpretations. The Registered Vascular Technologist is qualified to perform diagnostic imaging procedures of the peripheral vascular system using Doppler and/or duplex Doppler equipment.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited college, university or program
  • Must be registered by the ARDMS or CCI and possess RDCS or RCS credentials in Adult Echo. Must be registered by the ARDMS or CCI and possess RVT credential.
  • Current BLS certification or obtained within 6 months of hire required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs routine and specialized echocardiograms using {M-mode, 2D, Color/ Spectral Doppler, and related technologies} in accordance with SDMS, ASE, ICEAL, ARDMS and ACC/AHA standards/guidelines. Performs and assists with graded exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiographic procedures. Performs or assists in the performance of diagnostic imaging of the peripheral vascular system using Doppler or color/duplex/Doppler equipment. Such imaging may be performed on site at the hospital or at various offsite locations as scheduled by the department supervisor. Studies performed include upper and lower extremity venous color/duplex imaging, carotid color/duplex imaging and upper and lower extremity arterial Doppler testing and/or color/duplex imaging. In addition, other types of studies may be performed as they are developed and instituted in the department. Coordinates/ assists with performing Transesophogeal Echocardiograms and optimizing echocardiographic images and data.
  2. Operate, maintain and optimize ultrasound and related equipment.
  3. Transport ultrasound equipment to patient units {general floor, cath lab, recovery, emergency, intensive care} as required performing bedside exams. Travel and transport equipment to off-site locations to perform duties.
  4. Review patient charts and performs patient assessments to optimize and perform symptom-focused procedures. Acquire and analyze data to provide/prepare worksheets for medical staff review and interpretation.
  5. Function in an educational capacity for patients, patients’ family, nurses, physicians, and other audiences relative to skill.
  6. Participate in departmental/hospital quality assurance and clinical competency process.
  7. Cover a required amount of on-call responding to off-hour/ emergent calls (24/7)
  8. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
