General Summary:   The Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing the educational needs of the nursing staff and directing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activites.  The Nurse Educator also acts as a consultant to and support for the nursing management team in the areas of professional practice and delivery of care.     Essential Functions and Responsibilities: EDUCATIONAL PROCESS Assess the learning needs of nursing personnel and assist them in identifying their own needs.Plan, develop, and implement educational activities based on adult learning principles.Implement and/or coordinate educational activities and programs relevant to the learning needs of participants and goals of the organization.Evaluate the effectiveness of educational activities and programs.Oversee the storing of educational activity records.Consult with staff from other departments to assist them in identifying and meeting educational needs. ORIENTATION Assess, plan, direct, monitor, and evaluate competency-based orientation activities. STAFF DEVELOPMENT Provide activities and programs for staff to maintain awareness of standards, including accrediting organizations’ standards.Collaborate and consult with the nursing management team in matters of staff competence and performance, providing staff education when performance issues or non-compliance with standards occur due to a knowledge deficit.Assist staff in acquiring new competence based on standards. SELF DEVELOPMENT Demonstrate an awareness of own learning needs and seek ways to meet those needs in order to maintain competency and to respond to new clinical and organization demands. PROFESSIONALISM Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own practice.Demonstrate a commitment to group goals and teamwork.Collaborate with other educators in the Metro Health System. COMMUNICATION Develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with Nursing Administration Department, nursing management team, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team. CLINICAL ACTIVITIES Maintain knowledge and competence in current trends and practices in field of expertise.Demonstrate ability to promote staff competency in clinical psychomotor skills using a variety of methods.                                                                                           Maintains staff RN clinical competencies by working clinical hours on the unit with staff.  The number of hours to be negotiated with the ED Director. COMMITTEE PARTICIPATION Actively serve on committees/teams on a voluntary and appointed basis at department, hospital and community level. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT                                                                      Works with leadership team to monitor clinical process, outcomes and system issues related to quality of care provided;  develop quality filters, audits and case reviews; identify trends and sentinel events; help outline medical actions while maintaining confidentiality. OBJECTIVES Actively participate in accomplishing nursing services objectives. STANDARDS Actively support and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of generic and department-specific standards and hospital policies.Use standards as a basis for clinical and educational decision making.Participate in defining the functions and qualifications for nursing services positions. OPERATIONS Participate in researching, planning, implementing, and evaluating healthcare delivery systems.Participate in implementing new programs for nursing services.Participate in assessing the impact of other departments on the functioning of nursing services.Participate in developing and evaluating information systems for nursing services. MARKETING Market educational activities and programs to foster participation. ROLE MODEL Serve as a professional role model to motivate and develop nursing staff. RESEARCH Conduct research activities.Review and share literature and current research with nursing staff. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Provide input regarding educational needs during the capital and fiscal budget process. #RN
